Job decision

July 20th, 2013 at 03:29 am

When I was looking to return to the work force a couple of years back, I applied at some competing hospitals. One hired me while the other put my resume in their system for "the future".

Last week, the second hospital called me to ask me to interview. Because I have some issues with my job, I decided to go see what they had to offer.

Today, they called to offer me a job. The pay rate and benefits would be the same, but they offer an ICU differential that would amount to about 5K more each year. Its also a good bit closer to home.

The downside is that it would require me to work every other weekend (friday and saturday night) plus 1 Sunday each month, meaning I would only be guaranteed 1 full weekend off. I'd also be losing seniority and some opportunity for advancement.

I'm torn. Do I jump at the money or do I stay where I am with the possibility of advancing the first part of next year? The devil I know versus the devil I don't.

Would the 'issues' you have go away with an advancement? If so, then I'd stay. The increase in pay at the new job sounds like it comes with some changes that could negate the pay. Hard to say...good luck with the decisions.

No, the issues wouldn't really go away with the advancement. I'd still have to deal with the same management/personnel issues. But the type of advancement has been one of my long held career goals. This type of goal is not possible at the second hospital because they don't offer the service.

What are the opportunities for advancement in hospital #2 ? Do you feel after awhile, you will be ensnared in the 'politics' at hospital #2 ? The details will be different but the game is the same. How much value do you associate with your weekend activities? I'm not familiar with HR in hospitals but I have the impression that seniority has privileges as well as job security and movement up the pay scale. If there is opportunity to fulfill a long held career goal I'd give that point significant weight.

Is it possible to have a brief conversation with that 'special service' supervisor to ask her advice since you've been unexpectedly recruited by the other hospital but would like to join her team?

Sounds like the question would be whether you would regret not achieving your career goal? Money isn't everything, and regrets can weigh significantly on one's soul.

I think I'd go for the new job. But you should objectively consider the pros & cons. If it's closer to home, that's even more money and time that you'd save. And you'd learn something new.
